Understanding the Blackberry Ecosystem - BES vs BIS

Written By OMAH GENTENG on Thursday, June 2, 2011 | 8:03 AM

The BlackBerry ecosystem has been in existence for over ten years, so it's no wonder that there is a lot of confusing terminology associated with it. The difference between "BES" and "BIS" is particularly confusing, so let's see if we can clarify what each is and where they fit into the overall BlackBerry infrastructure.

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server
BES is short for BlackBerry Enterprise Server. As you might guess from its name, BES technology is focused on enterprise customers (medium to large companies). These companies use systems like Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange, or Novell Groupwise to provide employees with email and other related capabilities.
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server acts as a conduit between those systems and the employees' BlackBerry handhelds. It also provides companies with centralized control of those handhelds. And it acts as a proxy server so that BlackBerry users can browse the internet or the corporate intranet. In other words:
  • BES = corporate email + intranet/internet access + device management
To use the BES (and get access to corporate email), a BlackBerry handheld must be "paired" with a BES server managed by the company. The pairing process creates an encrypted two-way data link between the handheld and the server. The BES monitors the mailboxes on the corporate email server and uses that data link to provide instant notification to the handheld of new email, meeting invitations, calendar changes, etc.
That's the enterprise side of the BlackBerry ecosystem.

The BlackBerry Internet Service
BIS is short for BlackBerry Internet Service. Unlike the BES technology, BIS is a consumer technology. Consumers don't use a central mail server, they have mail accounts at various places like Yahoo!, Google, or their internet service provider (ISP). BIS lets them send and receive personal email. It also lets them browse the internet from their device. In other words:
  • BIS = personal email + internet access
After purchasing a BlackBerry handheld, the consumer creates a BIS account and registers his or her personal email addresses with the service. BIS then
That's the consumer side of BlackBerry ecosystem.

BES and BIS Coexistence
BES and BIS can coexist on the same BlackBerry handheld. BIS is provided by the wireless carrier. BES is provided by the employer, who purchases and installs the BES software on the corporate intranet. This means it's possible to send and receive corporate email and personal email from the same handheld, assuming the IT policies on the BES (which allow the employer to control what a paired device can or cannot do and overrides the user's preferences) don't specifically restrict BIS access.
It really is possible to get the best of both worlds -- personal and corporate -- with your BlackBerry handheld.

BlackBerry Applications - What Software Developers Need to Know

As the BlackBerry smartphone gains market share, software developers are increasingly wondering if they should be writing or porting applications to run on the BlackBerry platform. It's not a decision to be taken lightly because there are significant investments in time and effort in writing software for any mobile platform. And the BlackBerry platform is very different from the other platforms. Here's a quick rundown on what you need to know before creating BlackBerry applications.
  1. BlackBerry software is written in Java. Java is the only choice for non-browser application development. You can't write applications in C or C++, so don't even bother going there. (The very earliest models of the BlackBerry supported C/C++, but the platform switched to Java exclusively several years ago.)
  2. The Java is Java ME. The BlackBerry's Java support is for Java ME (Micro Edition), the stripped-down version of Java designed for mobile phones and other constrained devices. The language is the same (most features are supported) but the class libraries are vastly different -- mostly because they're much smaller. This makes porting code a challenge.
  3. But it's also BlackBerry-specific. The Java ME class library is small, so the BlackBerry augments it with a number of device-specific APIs, including the graphical user interface APIs. You need to learn these APIs to write "real" BlackBerry applications.
  4. You need to test on real devices. This shouldn't be any surprise to anyone who's done mobile application development before, but it's even truer on the BlackBerry platform. The BlackBerry simulator can easily give you a false sense of security when testing your application features, especially the networking aspects. There's nothing like testing it on a real device. Preferably, several real devices.
  5. BlackBerry infrastructure is complex. BlackBerry programming isn't just about understanding Java and the BlackBerry APIs, it's also about understanding the entire BlackBerry infrastructure, from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) to the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) and everything in between.
The reality is that BlackBerry programming is a specialization that is developed over time. It's not nearly as simple as it seems at first, as many developers have discovered to their dismay.

Why BlackBerry is Growing Rapidly in Indonesia

The BlackBerry smartphone has become increasingly popular especially in Indonesia.
The number of users has more than doubled within the past year of 2009.
Unlike other parts of the world where BlackBerry smartphones are used in corporations for corporate use and mainly as BES - BlackBerry Enterprise Solution for work, the smartphones are commonly used by the young as well in Indonesia for leisure activities such as for social networking especially with Facebook, Twitter and the BlackBerry Messenger service. Most users in Indonesia are subscribed to BIS - BlackBerry Internet Service instead of BES as in other parts of the world.

The reason for the popularity of BlackBerry in Indonesia can also be due to the fact that Indonesia operators are one of the first in the world to introduce prepaid services including daily and weekly rates as cheap as Rp5000 (by XL) per day which is around USD 0.55 per day for unlimited BIS package. Other cheaper options include the "lite" package where subscribers can opt for chatting with push email service or chatting with browsing services for as low as USD 0.30 per day. Other BIS operators apart from XL in Indonesia include Telkomsel, Indosat, Axis and Three Indonesia.

This made it easily affordable for the younger generation Indonesian to adopt using the smartphone. BlackBerry handhelds costs about Rp2.4juta / USD 250 for the Curve 8530 model which compared to the iPhone price tag of Rp8jt / USD850 made BlackBerry the smartphone choice for many youths. With this tremendous growth in popularity of BlackBerry in Indonesia, Research in Motion (RIM) has decided to set up several service centers in Indonesia.

Blackberry Phone Themes - How to Download and Install Free Blackberry Themes

Your Blackberry cell phone is like a miniature PC, and comes with wallpaper backgrounds and everything! Your Blackberry comes with a number of themes that you can use to customize your phone. But, sometimes, those themes just don't cut it!

If you're looking for more themes for your Blackberry in order to further customize your phone to your liking, you can find hundreds of free Blackberry themes online. You can download and install these themes by using either your phone, or your desktop manager.

Some of the websites that offer free online themes for your Blackberry do not have theme applications that can be installed onto your phone via desktop manager because they are over-the-air (OTA) applications. In such cases, you need to go online to get the theme downloaded and installed directly from your phone.

However, you can choose to explore the theme and what it might look like using your PC or laptop in order to avoid extra Internet usage on your phone. Then, once you've chosen a theme, an e-mail will be sent to your phone along with installation instructions and a link to get to your theme.

If you get free Blackberry themes from a website that has non-OTA applications, then you can install the themes using desktop manager.

To install the theme, download and extract the theme file, saving somewhere you can easily find it, like your desktop. Then, you connect your phone to your PC or laptop and use the application loader to add the extracted theme files to your phone. Once you've gone through the installation wizard, you'll be ready to reboot your Blackberry and enjoy your new theme.
